Exclusive Arthur Russell from Beats In Space

To break the collective listening cherry, something willfully obscurist from the excellent Beats In Space. The show is presented by Tim Sweeney and the DFA guys on New York’s killer WNYU every Tuesday Night from 10.30pm to 1am. The whole station is worth a listen round the clock (more posts as soon as possible!) but this show is just great.

I know virtually nothing about Tim (please help me…) save from he has ridiculously good taste, plays at London’s blinding knees-up Horsemeat Disco, and likes the sound of music more than that of his own voice. His staple is the best kind of wonky New York disco, but I picked out this one as it featured some real exclusive gems.

My knowledge of Arthur Russell is pretty flakey (lots of the mellow cello stuff), but this conversation between two massive fans (including Steve Knutson of Audika Records) getting deep and anorak-y was great, and as far as I can see this disco stuff aint that easy to come by anywhere else. There is something brilliant about hearing enthusiasts broadcasting from his hometown with such huge enthusiasm.
